3 Signs Your AC Needs a Repair

When your air conditioner starts acting strangely, the worst thing you can do is ignore the issue and hope that it gets better on its own. After all, air conditioners can’t fix themselves, and you don’t want to get stuck without cool air in the middle of a heatwave.

If you notice any of the following “red flags,” it’s time to get your AC system checked out by a professional.

1. The Air Coming Out Isn’t Cold

Air conditioners can lose their “cooling power” for several reasons. For instance, when the coils have gone too long without maintenance, and they build up a layer of dust and grime. When that happens, the evaporator coil struggles to absorb heat from your home, and the condenser coil struggles to release heat outside your home.

Your air conditioner might also be suffering from a refrigerant leak. Without an adequate amount of refrigerant circulating through the system, your AC might not be able to reach your desired temperature on sweltering days.

2. The Airflow Is Weak

Poor airflow can be the death of an air conditioner. Many times, you can solve this issue yourself by replacing your air filter. If the air filter is extremely dirty, then very likely, it’s preventing air from circulating through your AC system.

If the air coming from your vents still feels weak after you replace the air filter, then you’re most likely dealing with one of these problems:

  • A malfunctioning blower that’s not pushing air out strongly enough

  • A frozen evaporator coil that’s blocking airflow through your system

  • Leaky ductwork that’s allowing air to escape before it reaches your vents

3. Your AC Is Creating Bad Smells

Your air conditioner should not create a noticeable smell while operating. Any odd smell (burning, oily, musty, moldy, etc.) means that there's either some malfunctioning machinery in your system or a component that needs to be thoroughly cleaned.
